- are the publisher and journal well respected?
- quality of editorial board?
- aims and scope of journal?
- audience of journal?
- where similar good papers are published (e.g., those in the
reference list)?
- indexing and abstracting (Web of Science, Scopus, MathSciNet, etc.)?
- impact factor of journal?
- article-processing charge (publication fee)?
- open access (gold, green or hybrid)?
- self-archiving options?
- quality and length of review process?
- likelihood of the paper getting accepted for publication in journal?
- et cetera ...
Stay away from low-ranked journals, hijacked journals and predatory publishers and journals.
